The financial rewards and fame gained through money heists entice others to pursue such unlawful means for fulfilling their financial needs. Although some robbers participate in small bank robberies, the world has witnessed some incredible money heists that are now becoming harder to accomplish due to high-tech alarm response services.
Here’s an interesting insight into the biggest money heists recorded in the history books:
In 1997, Los Angeles witnessed one of the most shocking money heists in the world. The Dunbar Armored Car Robbery in Los Angeles resulted from an excellent observation made by the mastermind, Allen Pace.
Working in Dunbar’s armored car depot, Pace recorded the timings of the security cameras and used his access key to penetrate the facility. Pace planned the robbery with his five childhood friends. His friends waited in the cafeteria while Pace ambushed every armed and unarmed security officer in the facility.
The gang united in the facility and reached the vault. They loaded an amount worth $18.9 million into a truck and escaped. The gang invested most of the money into legal businesses to avoid suspicion. However, one of the gang members was traced due to an original strap of cash, leading to the arrest of the entire gang.
The Great Train Robbery in 1963 is one of the most famous money heists in the UK’s criminal history. The robbery took place in a post office train traveling to London from Glasgow.
A 15-men gang planned to steal money from a high-value carriage carrying millions of pounds. The gang planned the robbery on the day after a bank holiday, so there was a relatively large amount of money on the train on the robbery day.
The gang ambushed the train driver and the men in the high-value carriage. In the next 20 minutes, they looted more than £2.5 million and escaped from the train. However, most of the crew was arrested after the identification of their fingerprints on ketchup bottles and monopoly board game retrieved from their post-robbery hideout.
In 1983, the Heathrow International Trading Estate suffered a massive setback in the Brinks Mat Robbery. A group of six men broke into the Brinks Mat warehouse, beat up the security guards, and threatened them by pouring petrol over their bodies.
The gang expected to steal a few million dollars but was fortunate to find hefty quantities of gold and diamond in addition to cash worth £26 million.
