An SRO or School Resource Officer helps the school administration guarantee a caring, safe place of learning for both staff and students. This way, it helps balance enforcement with intervention and prevention. Since members develop friendships over time with both staff and students, the SRO position is a very rewarding experience for an officer.
At HSPS Special Operations, our SROs and school safety officers are dedicated to fostering partnerships among the school, the service, and the surrounding community, building successful students by ensuring safe environments.
HSPS Special Operations’ school safety officers in Cincinnati play an important role in redirecting youth who may have become involved with the criminal justice system. Our safety officers work with community programs and school administrators to help navigate youth away from conventional processing and ensure they can access community resources in a better way.
At HSPS Special Operations, our SROs work cooperatively with parents, students, staff, administrators, and the community to determine and address school problems or concerns through structured class presentations. These education and awareness sessions are created on various topics (including safe driving, healthy relationships, and drug use) and are all customized to fit the student population.
Our SROs work diligently to ensure the safety of every student and staff member. From making themselves available for group or one-to-one discussions with staff or students on the topics of school violence, security, and safety to planning and performing lockdown drills across the schoolyear. While our SROs are constantly in touch with the school committees and administration, they’re also the first line of prevention in school, deterring crime-related incidents like the use of threats or weapons, theft or robbery, stalking or harassment, vandalism and graffiti, and bullying.
At HSPS Special Operations, our SROs play an integral role within the school setting. From helping to connect students to school and community resources to offering mentoring, mediation, and counseling, and participating in school or student-led activities – there’s nothing our SROs can’t do. By having students engage with an authoritative figure in a non-confrontational manner, we help them see officers as someone they can rely on. Plus, it usually allows students to raise their voices and discuss what issues they may be facing. For example, students may simply seek advice on peer relationships, discuss negative family dynamics, decisions that may have been made among their friends, or other questionable experiences.
